K. Shanti Swarup is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, where he has held a faculty position since 2000.
He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1991, specialising in Electrical Power Systems. He holds an M.Tech in Electrical Engineering from REC-Warangal (1985) and a B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from JNTU-COE Kakinada (1983).
Before joining IIT Madras he worked in Japan: as a Visiting Researcher at Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Osaka, from 1992 to 1995, and as a Visiting Professor at the Kitami Institute of Technology, Hokkaido, from 1996 to 1999. He was appointed Assistant Professor at IIT Madras in 2000, Associate Professor in 2006, and Professor in 2009.
His research and teaching cover power system computer applications, operation and control; optimization techniques; deregulation and restructured power systems; digital and numerical protection and web-based SCADA; computational intelligence; energy management systems and network automation; distributed artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems; distributed computing; smart grid control, demand response, restoration and smart micro energy grids; and information and communication technology for power systems.
He has supervised completed doctoral and masters research across power systems modeling, optimization, energy management systems, restructured power systems, protection automation, smart power grids and renewable energy systems, and has carried out industrial consultancy and sponsored research for partners in India and abroad.
